The Omani Network for Volunteers “Taawun” launched the “Jawlan” initiative within the Promo Taawun Program, which falls under the umbrella of the Taawun Academy for the year 2023. The initiative aims to enhance youth awareness of the importance of Omani natural reserves as a tourist attraction.
This initiative targets school students and those interested in domestic tourism to increase accurate and adequate information about natural reserves and tourism components.
The vision is to form a generation that is aware of the reserves importance in the Omani environment and to contribute to the tourism movement, and the mission is to show the importance of natural reserves in the Sultanate as a tourist attraction in new educational and interactive ways.
Among the goals that the initiative seeks to achieve is to highlight the element of sustainability in the reserves and their components, and to empower, motivate and direct individuals to exploit the environmental beauty and biological and biological diversity in the Omani reserves.
The initiative includes many programs and activities specialized in the field of eco-tourism, including an exhibition to raise awareness of natural reserves in Oman, and field visits by school students to these reserves to see their beauty closely and promote them in the places of tourists from inside and outside the Sultanate. Some films, illustrated materials and publications were also designed to document the beauty of the reserves in the Sultanate.
One of the first initiatives that was established was the “Journey in It” initiative, which targets school students, and which was established in Sarh Al-Ebdaa International School in Al-Mawaleh, and one of its most important goals was to educate students about the importance of reserves as a tourist attraction, with the presentation of videos and illustrations in a simplified way. The proposal for the executive program for the event came as follows: ice-breaking activity, an entertaining PowerPoint presentation for students, entertainment competitions and visual presentations via the VR device for reserves in the Sultanate.
As for the second event, the Jolan initiative included an exhibition to raise awareness of Omani reserves, which was held in the Awakening Gardens Park in Muscat.
The exhibition included a corner to introduce the Omani network for volunteers (Taawun), a corner for the Environment Authority to raise awareness of the Omani reserves and their various natural components, a corner for the Natural History Museum to display Omani stuffed animals and some shells and rocks, a corner for viewing natural reserves using virtual reality technology, and finally a corner for children’s entertainment through coloring. The role of the reserves in tourism movement of the different groups of society, and the number of attendees reached nearly 300 visitors of different ages.
At the end of the events, Jolan joined a school trip to the Al-Sulayel Nature Reserve in the south of Al-Sharqiyah, specifically the Al-Kamil and Al-Wafi area. This event targeted school students in order to raise awareness of the importance of nature reserves as a tourist attraction in the Sultanate of Oman. It also aims to highlight the element of sustainability in natural reserves tourism, and also to show the element of creativity. The event included a lot of programs, including a visual presentation to introduce children to the animals and natural patterns in the reserve, as well as a field tour in the reserve. At the end, the children planted trees in the reserve to achieve the goal of cultivation and increasing the green area.
