University Medical City Achieves Oman’s First Advanced Lymphatic Microsurgery for Cancer Patients

Muscat, Oman – June 22, 2026

The University Medical City has achieved a major medical breakthrough by successfully performing Oman’s first lymphaticovenous anastomosis surgery following lymph node removal in cancer patients. The pioneering procedure was carried out by a collaborative team from the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital and the Department of Surgical Oncology at the Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Center.

The advanced operation is classified as a supermicrosurgical procedure, requiring the connection of extremely small lymphatic vessels—less than 0.5 millimeters in diameter—to nearby veins. This innovative technique improves lymphatic fluid drainage after lymph node removal, significantly reducing the risk of developing lymphedema, a common complication that can affect patients after cancer treatment.

Medical specialists involved in the procedure explained that the surgery helps alleviate swelling, discomfort, and other symptoms associated with lymphatic dysfunction. By restoring proper lymphatic flow, patients can experience improved recovery, enhanced mobility, and a better overall quality of life.

The successful completion of the procedure highlights the growing expertise of Oman’s healthcare sector and demonstrates the effectiveness of multidisciplinary collaboration among specialized medical teams. It also reflects the advanced capabilities available within the University Medical City and its affiliated healthcare institutions.

Healthcare leaders noted that this achievement represents an important step toward establishing a comprehensive national program for lymphatic microsurgery in Oman. Such a program would expand access to highly specialized treatments, reduce the need for patients to seek care abroad, and support the country’s broader healthcare development goals.

As Oman continues to invest in medical innovation and specialized healthcare services, this milestone reinforces the nation’s position as a regional leader in advanced cancer care and surgical excellence.
