Revolutionizing Organic Date Palm Farming in Oman: A Model for Sustainable Agriculture

A Milestone Achievement in Organic Certification

The organic farm in Ibri, located in Al Dhahirah Governorate, has made significant strides in sustainable agriculture by obtaining the prestigious international organic farming certification “Ecocert.” This achievement positions it as the largest certified organic date palm farm in the Sultanate of Oman.

Leading the Way in Sustainable Practices

Belonging to Oman Date Palm Development Company, this farm stands out as a pioneering project in the country, contributing to both food security and economic returns. The farm aims to revolutionize the date palm sector by implementing the latest technologies and scientific advancements, thereby enhancing the productivity of Omani dates and their competitiveness in global markets.

Expanding Global Reach

Recently, the organic farm successfully secured the ECOCERT certification for two programs, enabling the company to market its products in both American and European Union markets. This international recognition underscores the company’s steadfast commitment to organic practices and solidifies its leading position in the industry.

Ambitious Growth Plans

The organic farm encompasses 35,000 date palm trees of various sought-after varieties, including Fardh, Khalas, Fuhul, and Majdool, spread over an impressive area of approximately 4.8 million square meters. The company has ambitious plans to expand its date palm cultivation, aiming to increase the total number of trees to 50,000 to meet global market demands.

Innovative Irrigation Techniques for Sustainability

In terms of irrigation, the farm employs cutting-edge techniques that enhance productivity and efficiency. The integrated and automated irrigation systems are equipped with standard sensors to ensure that the plants receive the optimal amount of water while minimizing waste. This commitment to sustainability is a testament to the company’s dedication to the optimal use of natural resources, including water and soil.

Commitment to Organic Excellence

The organic farm strictly adheres to organic methods, avoiding chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and genetic modifications. This approach results in higher quality products that are increasingly favored by consumers.

A Vision for the Future

The Sultanate of Oman is keen on promoting date palm cultivation through the establishment of modern farms dedicated to date production across various governorates. This initiative aims to bolster agricultural, economic, environmental, and food security development while also tapping into promising investment opportunities in this vital sector.

As Oman continues to focus on sustainable agricultural practices, the success of the organic farm in Ibri serves as a model for future initiatives in the region.
