Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre Strengthens Sustainability with Solar Energy Initiatives
The Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre is reinforcing its position as a leader in environmental sustainability through a series of green initiatives aimed at reducing energy consumption and supporting renewable energy development in the Sultanate of Oman.
One of the centre’s most notable achievements is the implementation of a large-scale solar energy project with a capacity of 4.6 megawatt-peak (MWp). The system covers more than 16,000 square meters and includes over 8,000 high-efficiency solar panels capable of generating approximately 7,000 megawatt-hours of electricity annually.
According to the centre, the renewable energy project now supplies nearly 25 percent of its total electricity consumption, contributing significantly to reducing dependence on conventional power sources and lowering operational emissions.
The project also supports Oman’s sustainability and energy transition goals by cutting carbon emissions by more than 3,000 tonnes each year. In addition to environmental benefits, the solar installation improves the thermal efficiency of the buildings by reducing indoor temperatures and protecting rooftop infrastructure from heat exposure.
Solar Energy for Water Heating
As part of its broader sustainability strategy, the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre has installed 250 solar panels dedicated to water heating systems. These panels provide nearly 90 percent of the facility’s hot water requirements, helping reduce electricity consumption linked to traditional heating methods.
A Hub for Sustainability-Focused Events
The centre continues to serve as a major hub for sustainability-focused events and conferences. Key upcoming events include Oman Sustainability Week and the Oman Energy & Water Conference & Exhibition, both of which highlight innovations in renewable energy, sustainable resource management, and environmental technologies.
Green Spaces and Biodiversity
Environmental sustainability efforts at the centre also extend to landscaping and biodiversity conservation. The venue has adopted eco-friendly green space designs using drought-resistant native plants to reduce water consumption and maintenance costs. These green areas provide habitats for more than 100 species of birds and wildlife while also helping reduce urban heat through natural cooling effects.
In a move that blends sustainability with cultural identity, the centre has planted over 60 seasonal fruit trees, including mango, lemon, palm, pomegranate, apple, and sidr trees. The initiative reflects Oman’s rich agricultural heritage while enhancing the visitor experience with educational and environmentally friendly urban spaces.
Supporting Oman Vision 2040
The Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre’s sustainability projects align with Oman Vision 2040 and demonstrate the country’s growing commitment to renewable energy, environmental responsibility, and sustainable urban development.
