Oman Expresses Concern Over Iraq’s UN Map Submission Affecting Kuwait’s Maritime Sovereignty

Muscat — February 24, 2026

The Sultanate of Oman has expressed deep concern over the coordinates and map submitted by the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations, stating that the submission affects Kuwait’s sovereignty over its maritime areas and established, stable water elevations.

In a statement issued today by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oman reaffirmed its solidarity with the State of Kuwait regarding its sovereignty over all its maritime zones and water elevations. The statement underscored Oman’s firm support for Kuwait’s territorial and maritime rights.

Oman also called on Iraq to take into account the historical and fraternal relations between the two countries, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the principles of good neighborliness and international law.

The Sultanate further urged Iraq to respect the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982, as well as existing bilateral understandings, agreements, and memoranda of understanding concluded between Iraq and Kuwait.

Oman stressed that resolving such matters in accordance with international law and mutual agreements is essential for maintaining regional stability and strengthening relations between neighboring countries.
