Behind the massive mud-brick walls of Bahla Fort, the ancient market has long been the beating heart of local life. Here, the clanging of metal on metal once echoed daily through narrow clay-lined corridors, as coppersmiths shaped vessels that would cook the feasts of generations.
A Sanctuary for Traditional Crafts
A municipal coordination meeting in the Wilayat of Bahla focused on plans to activate the recently restored shops and support traditional craft industries within the heritage market. The project to restore and develop the souq is scheduled for official handover in July 2026. Currently, the team is finalizing the designs for Phase 3, which focuses on the historic coppersmiths’ site, locally known as the Saffarin area, and the northern shops of the market. By reviving these spaces, the project aims to reintegrate traditional Omani crafts back into the daily life of the community.
Preserving the authenticity of the souq is central to the project’s architectural philosophy. Nasser bin Humaid Al-Wardi, a municipal council member representing Bahla, emphasized the importance of maintaining the historical and architectural identity of the market. The project will ensure the restored shops match the traditional Omani style, using natural materials and avoiding asphalt on the market paths. “We must ensure the Bahla Heritage Market remains a living showcase of our historical legacy,” Al-Wardi noted, stressing the need to preserve clay finishes and wooden structures.
Connecting the Community
The revitalization has already made significant progress. Services and electricity have been connected to 62 restored shops through Nama Electricity Company, setting the stage for local merchants to return. Beyond coppersmithing, the market plans to establish new sections for agricultural produce, fresh fish, and seasonal Omani crops. There are also plans for annual community festivals celebrating local dates, honey, and traditional sugarcane processing. These initiatives will transform the historic souq into a bustling cultural hub, connecting the modern town to its ancestral roots.
