Sultan Qaboos Hospital Introduces AlphaVac: A Breakthrough in Blood Clot Treatment Without Surgery

Sultan Qaboos University Hospital Leads GCC With Groundbreaking AlphaVac Technology for Blood Clot Removal

Sultan Qaboos University Hospital continues to set the standard for advanced healthcare in Oman by adopting cutting-edge technologies that enhance patient outcomes and reduce recovery time. In a pioneering move, the hospital has become the first healthcare institution in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region to implement the American-made AlphaVac system for the non-surgical removal of blood clots.

AlphaVac is one of the most advanced technologies in interventional radiology, enabling efficient removal of deep vein and pulmonary embolisms without the need for open surgery. This innovation marks a transformative step in traditional treatment approaches, offering patients a faster recovery process with significantly fewer complications.

According to the hospital’s interventional radiology team, integrating AlphaVac into Oman’s medical ecosystem reflects a strong commitment to innovation and excellence in specialized care. The system addresses a growing demand for safer, more effective treatment options for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).

The procedure involves inserting a catheter through the femoral vein under radiological guidance, and using a control device that extracts clots while minimizing blood loss. Compared to conventional surgery, which can take several hours, AlphaVac procedures typically last 30–60 minutes, with many patients leaving intensive care in under 24 hours.

With a success rate exceeding 90%, AlphaVac has proven to significantly lower risks associated with blood clot treatment, such as excessive bleeding or prolonged recovery. It has also emerged as a safe alternative for patients who are ineligible for surgery due to underlying health conditions.

The medical team reported noticeable improvements in patients’ recovery speed and quality of life post-treatment. Many patients were able to return to normal activity levels shortly after the procedure, reinforcing confidence in the technology among healthcare providers and recipients alike.

This strategic step is part of the hospital’s broader mission to expand its interventional services and maintain its status as a national referral center. By embracing innovative solutions like AlphaVac, Sultan Qaboos University Hospital continues to place Oman on the map for regional and international medical excellence.
