Shura Council Reviews Oman Centre for Net Zero’s Updated National Plan
The Shura Council hosted H.E. Eng. Mohsin bin Hamad Al Hadhrami, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, on Monday to review the objectives and updated national plan of the Oman Centre for Net Zero. The session, attended by H.E. Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Nadabi, Secretary General of the Council, and several Council Members, demonstrates ongoing coordination between Oman’s legislative and executive bodies.
The briefing detailed national efforts to reach carbon neutrality. This transition supports the broader goals of Oman Vision 2040 and the country’s sustainable development strategy.
Leading the Transition to a Low-Carbon Economy
During the session, His Excellency outlined the role of the Oman Centre for Net Zero. The Centre directs the national shift toward a low-carbon economy by formulating and revising national plans. It oversees net-zero initiatives and manages the carbon certificates system alongside the national carbon registry.
The Centre also supports scientific research, builds national capacity, improves energy efficiency, and integrates global climate technologies into local operations.
The Updated National Plan for Emissions Reduction
The presentation highlighted the updated national plan, built on an integrated roadmap for reducing emissions. The plan relies on specific regulatory, legislative, and financial frameworks to ensure a measured approach. It focuses on improving efficiency across priority sectors and accelerating their transition.
His Excellency noted that achieving net zero represents an economic opportunity. The transition aims to strengthen the national economy, localize green industries, attract investment, and create jobs. It also positions Omani exports to compete more effectively in global markets.
The “Mizan” Platform and Carbon Markets
The presentation covered recent achievements, particularly the launch of the national “Mizan” platform. This system manages and inventories carbon emissions, giving decision-makers a comprehensive tool to monitor reduction projects and measure performance across sectors.
Discussions also addressed developments in Oman’s carbon markets framework. New regulatory and institutional measures aim to establish Oman in global carbon markets, attract investment, and facilitate technology transfer. These steps open new avenues for small and medium enterprises and national talent within the carbon economy.
The meeting underscores the Shura Council’s commitment to monitoring national priority programs. By tracking government policies on energy transition and climate action, the Council reinforces its legislative and oversight roles while supporting Oman’s sustainable development agenda.
