Oman is charting a bold path to a greener future with the National Initiative to Plant 10 Million Wild Oman Trees.
Driven by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs and supported by PDO (Oman Oil Company) and a broad coalition
of government bodies, private sector partners, and civil society, the program places Oman at the forefront of biodiversity
conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable development in the Gulf region.

Why Oman is Leading on Sustainability

This initiative embodies Oman’s commitment to a sustainable, resilient economy. Spanning 2020–2030, the program aims to
restore natural vegetation, expand green cover, and combat desertification across the Sultanate. By prioritizing native wild
trees and local genetic resources, Oman is aligning environmental stewardship with economic opportunity and community well-being.

The initiative emphasizes biodiversity preservation through native species, climate resilience and carbon stock enhancement,
community engagement and sustainable livelihoods, and alignment with Vision 2040 and its green-growth agenda.

What Makes This Initiative Special

The plan prioritizes indigenous trees such as ghaf (Prosopis cineraria), samr, sidr, shoua,
tayq, talh, and other drought-tolerant varieties tuned to Oman’s diverse climates. Key components include:

  • Establishment of seed banks to preserve genetic diversity.
  • Expansion of nurseries to supply robust, locally adapted saplings.
  • Data-driven planning informed by environmental research and monitoring.
  • Wide-ranging community involvement for education and stewardship.
  • Cross-sector partnerships (government, PDO, private sector, civil society) to scale impact.

The Plan in Practice

Annual targets set a goal to plant one million trees per year to steadily restore degraded rangelands, protect biodiversity,
and enhance green cover. Planting strategies are tailored to each governorate’s climate, soil, and water conditions. Infrastructure
investments include nurseries, seed banks, and a research agenda focused on plant science, ecology, and agroforestry.

The initiative also emphasizes community empowerment through public awareness campaigns and hands-on volunteering opportunities
in schools, neighborhoods, and workplaces.

Strategic Benefits for Oman

  • Improved soil health, water retention and resilience to arid conditions.
  • Stronger biodiversity hotspots and habitats for pollinators and wildlife.
  • Economic diversification through forestry-based industries and eco-tourism.
  • Social resilience from local employment and community stewardship.
  • Scalable regional model for desertification mitigation and biodiversity conservation.

How Success Will Be Measured

Success metrics include sapling survival rates, growth measurements, landscape restoration coverage, soil and water health indicators,
seed bank and nursery productivity, and public engagement statistics from planting events and educational programs.

Supporting Oman Vision 2040

The initiative complements Vision 2040 by channeling environmental sustainability into economic transformation, improved social well-being,
and strengthened climate resilience.

How You Can Get Involved

  • Volunteer at local tree-planting events.
  • Participate in educational programs and raise awareness.
  • Support local nurseries by purchasing saplings or advocating funding.
  • Partner with government programs as a business or civil society organization.

About the Partnership Landscape

The initiative brings together the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, PDO, other government agencies, private sector partners,
and civil society groups — exemplifying public-private collaboration for sustainable development.
