Two Omani students from Nizwa, Al-Reem bint Rashid Al-Eisai and Al-Noor bint Ahmed Al-Ajmi, have engineered an intelligent waste sorting bin using robotics and artificial intelligence. This local innovation marks a practical step forward in the Sultanate’s transition toward sustainable waste management and green technology adoption.
The project targets the dual challenges of recycling efficiency and the occupational hazards of manual waste sorting. By combining computer vision with automation, the system allows a robotic mechanism to identify and categorize waste types, sorting them without direct human contact.
“Our goal was to create a technological solution that helps the system recognize waste materials instantly,” said Al-Reem Al-Eisai. “This application shows how robotics can directly support green concepts and solve municipal challenges.”
The system operates in real-time, utilizing custom software to differentiate between plastic, paper, and organic waste, sending commands to mechanical sorters. This integration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) principles addresses local environmental challenges while highlighting the capability of Omani youth in developing advanced technological prototypes.
As Oman pursues its circular economy goals, projects like this smart sorting bin demonstrate the value of youth-led technical research. By turning theoretical concepts into working prototypes, these innovators provide a blueprint for safer, more efficient municipal operations.
