The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Environment Authority and the Oman National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science, participated in the 5th World Conference on Man and the Biosphere, held in Hangzhou, China. The international conference brought together experts from over 150 countries to address pressing global issues related to biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, and climate action.
Key Highlights of Oman’s Participation
- Participated in the UNESCO session titled “Biodiversity, Science, and Education,” emphasizing the role of research and education in biodiversity conservation.
- Highlighted the value of biosphere reserves as living laboratories for multidisciplinary research.
- Showcased local crafts and products from Omani natural reserve communities at the exhibition, attracting over 1,800 visitors in just three days.
- Distributed more than 1,400 souvenir gifts to visitors.
- Announced the inclusion of two new Omani reserves into UNESCO’s global biosphere network, to be formalized during the 37th session of the International Coordinating Council (September 26–28, 2025).
Oman’s active involvement at the conference underscores its strong commitment to global environmental cooperation, biodiversity protection, and sustainable development. This engagement further reinforces Oman’s position as a key contributor to international conservation efforts.
