Omama Al Lawati: A Voice of Knowledge, Creativity, and Justice

Profile

From Oman — academic, creative, and committed to social justice.

Omama Al Lawati is a distinguished Omani scholar, writer, and photographer whose work bridges rigorous research, humanistic photography, and powerful storytelling. Trained in media and communication, she combines intellectual depth with creative energy, producing scholarship, children’s literature, essays, and evocative photographic work.

Her academic credentials include a PhD in Journalism and Media Studies, a Master’s in Public Relations and Communication, and an additional Master’s in Interfaith Dialogue. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communication from Sultan Qaboos University. These qualifications underpin a career that moves effortlessly between research and public-facing cultural work.

“Words have the power to change reality and to advocate for justice.”

Work & Creative Practice

As an academic, Omama has contributed to books, scholarly chapters, and journal articles. Alongside her academic writing, she is a prolific author of children’s literature — having published more than fourteen children’s books — and writes short stories and essays that resonate with clarity and moral purpose.

Photography is another integral dimension of her practice. Omama’s photographic eye is humanistic: she frames people, places, and natural environments with sensitivity, seeking to tell stories that connect viewers to broader cultural and ecological contexts. Her work as a nature and cultural photographer complements her scholarly interests in media, identity, and communication.

Advocacy & Values

Central to Omama’s public voice is an ethical commitment to justice. She views solidarity and human rights as inseparable from intellectual life, and her advocacy for the Palestinian cause is framed as a humanitarian and ethical duty that aligns with her broader mission. Her writing and public interventions reflect a belief that language and ideas can reshape social reality and mobilize compassion.

She is active in civic and cultural organizations: she has served on the board of the Environment Society of Oman and is a member of the Omani Association of Writers as well as the British Association for Islamic Studies. These roles reflect her interest in sustainability, cultural heritage, and intercultural dialogue.

Personal

Beyond her public life, Omama is a loving mother whose personal commitments shape the tone of her work — combining care, intellectual curiosity, and creative courage. She is known for bringing together scientific thinking and artistic sensibility, continually seeking new ways to amplify human stories and ethical reflection.
