From Stars to Safaris: Oman Launches Bold Eco-Tourism Projects Across 7 Nature Reserves
In a bold step toward positioning Oman as a regional leader in eco-tourism and sustainable development, the Environment Authority has announced the signing of nine key contracts totaling more than 44 million Omani rials. These agreements span seven nature reserves, aiming to boost green investment while conserving the Sultanate’s natural heritage and biodiversity.
The announcement was made during an official signing ceremony under the patronage of His Excellency Salim bin Mohammed Al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, and attended by senior government officials and environmental specialists.
Major Eco-Tourism Projects in Oman:
The investment involves a collaboration with the Oman Tourism Development Company (Omran Group) and other prominent entities, focusing on the development and management of several natural reserves, including:
- Ras Al Shajar Nature Reserve (Muscat).
- Turtle Nature Reserve (South Sharqiyah).
- Arabian Oryx Nature Reserve (Al Wusta).
- Wetlands Nature Reserve (Al Wusta).
- Lajashlyoon Site in Jabal Samhan Reserve (Dhofar).
- Hayour Viewpoint in Mirbat (Dhofar).
- Khawr Al Mughsayl Reserve (Salalah, Dhofar).
- Al Hajar Al Gharbi Star Lights Reserve (Interior Governorate).
Highlighted Developments Include:
- A state-of-the-art eco-resort and stargazing park in Al Hajar Al Gharbi Star Lights Reserve, developed with Madar Resorts and the Oman Astronomical Society.
- A comprehensive nature tourism complex in Khawr Al Mughsayl, operated by Al Majal Integrated Foundation.
- A range of visitor attractions such as interactive exhibits, eco-camps, hiking trails, and a marine turtle conservation lake.
Advancing Oman Vision 2040 through Green Tourism:
Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, emphasized that these initiatives reflect a modern and sustainable approach to environmental investment. The projects are designed to integrate tourism with environmental protection through:
- Eco-lodges and nature-based resorts.
- Stargazing trails and observation decks.
- Educational visitor centers and interactive museums.
- Guided safaris and marine exploration experiences.
These efforts support the strategic objectives of Oman Vision 2040, particularly in areas related to environmental stewardship, diversifying the economy, and promoting sustainable tourism.
Empowering Local Communities through Sustainable Tourism:
Dr. Hashil bin Obaid Al Mahrouqi, CEO of Omran Group, highlighted the dual role of eco-tourism in preserving Oman’s environment while also creating economic opportunities and engaging local communities.
Engineer Suleiman bin Nasser Al Akhzami, Director General of Nature Conservation, noted that the projects cover a vast area of approximately 5,660 square kilometers, and were selected based on rigorous environmental criteria, including:
- Compliance with conservation and management plans.
- Environmentally responsible design and construction.
- Clear risk assessments and execution timelines.
- Alignment between investor expertise and project goals.
Oman’s Expanding Network of Protected Areas:
Oman is home to 31 officially designated nature reserves, each representing a unique ecosystem and offering vast potential for eco-tourism and conservation-led development. These protected areas play a vital role in safeguarding endangered species, regulating the climate, and providing environmental education to the public.
