Omani Cuisine Wins Global Recognition at Gourmand Awards 2025 in Portugal
The Sultanate of Oman has earned global acclaim at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2025, held in Lisbon, Portugal. Represented by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, Oman showcased its rich culinary traditions and cultural heritage through the book “Documenting the Omani Cuisine”, developed in collaboration with Sultan Qaboos University. The prestigious event took place from June 18 to 21, 2025, celebrating the best in food writing, culinary literature, and gastronomy culture worldwide.
Oman Wins Two Global Awards for Culinary Excellence
The Omani entry won two international accolades, marking a significant milestone in the global recognition of the nation’s food heritage:
- Best Culinary Diplomacy Book in the World
- Best Cookbook in the Intangible Cultural Heritage Category
These honors position Omani cuisine on the world stage, emphasizing its historical depth, cultural richness, and potential as a pillar of culinary tourism.
Highlighting Omani Culinary Identity on the Global Stage
Fatma bint Ali Al-Lawatiyah, Assistant Director of Institutional Planning and a key member of the Culinary Tourism Program, noted that the awards signify international appreciation for Oman’s culinary traditions. She stated, “These achievements inspire us to continue promoting Oman’s national identity and culinary creativity through global platforms.”
The recognition reinforces Oman’s commitment to preserving and sharing its intangible cultural heritage, especially as food becomes a powerful tool in fostering global cultural understanding.

Asma bint Salem Al-Hajriyah, tourism promotion expert at the Ministry, emphasized the strategic importance of this international participation. She explained that the initiative aligns with the Ministry’s efforts to elevate Oman’s cultural and culinary presence on the regional and global tourism map.
“Omani cuisine is one of our most authentic cultural expressions,” she said, “deeply rooted in our civilizational heritage and a key asset in promoting Oman as a distinct tourism destination.”
