Oman Desert Marathon: A Unique Sporting Event Showcasing Oman’s Natural Beauty and Tourism

Bidiyah, January 22 – The Oman Desert Marathon, held annually, is a standout event that combines thrilling athletic competition with tourism promotion, highlighting the stunning landscapes of Oman’s Eastern Desert. The marathon concluded today with its 10th edition, further boosting Oman’s tourism appeal, especially in the North Sharqiyah Governorate.

Moroccan Athletes Shine at Oman Desert Marathon

Moroccan runners Mohamed Al-Murabti and Aziza Al-Raji triumphed in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively, securing first place in this challenging desert race.

Al-Murabti claimed victory after completing the 165-kilometer race over four stages in an impressive time of 15 hours, 44 minutes, and 25 seconds. His fellow Moroccan, Rachid Al-Murabti, finished second at 15 hours, 56 minutes, and 48 seconds, while Saleh Al-Saidi, an Omani runner, earned third place with a time of 16 hours, 2 minutes, and 47 seconds.

In the women’s race, Aziza Al-Raji topped the standings with a time of 22 hours, 39 minutes, and 17 seconds. Elida Alowham from the UK finished second at 25 hours, 56 minutes, and 30 seconds, while her compatriot Sally Ford secured third place with a time of 27 hours, 47 minutes, and 20 seconds.

Promoting Oman’s Rich Heritage and Local Tourism

Saeed bin Mohammed Al-Hajri, the general supervisor of the marathon, emphasized that the event has continued to grow in prominence, attracting international participation and media attention. He noted that the Oman Desert Marathon is a key event in promoting Oman’s tourism and global visibility.

The marathon, organized in collaboration with various government and private entities, featured four stages covering a total of 165 kilometers. The stages included:

  • Stage 1: 42 kilometers
  • Stage 2: 55 kilometers
  • Stage 3: 47 kilometers (held at night)
  • Stage 4: 21 kilometers

Additionally, a 100-kilometer walking race was held, and over 1,100 participants from around the world took part in the event.

North Sharqiyah Governorate: A Hub for Adventure and Tourism

Zubaida bint Salem Al-Shidaniya, spokesperson for North Sharqiyah Governorate, highlighted the importance of the marathon in promoting the region’s heritage and diverse tourist attractions. The governorate boasts unique features such as valleys, golden sands, towering mountains, and an exceptional winter season filled with exciting events. The ‘Rahala’ entertainment festival, hosted in Al-Qabil, was a major highlight of the season. Marathon participants had the opportunity to experience this and other activities, including camel and horse races, visits to local heritage sites, and exploration of vibrant markets.

By supporting the Oman Desert Marathon, North Sharqiyah Governorate aims to attract tourists from both Oman and around the world. The region is positioning itself as a prime destination for sports, adventure, and cultural events, showcasing its natural beauty and ability to host global events.
