World Environment Day – Sultanate of Oman
The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Environment Agency, participates in the celebration of World Environment Day, which falls on June 5 of each year under the slogan “Our Land, Our Future,” focusing on restoring lands, stopping desertification and building drought resistance.
The celebration occasion comes within the efforts of countries around the world to raise awareness about environmental issues, encourage communities to take action to protect the environment, strengthen environmental policies at the local, national and international levels, and involve youth and communities in environmental activities, in addition to international cooperation between countries to address global environmental issues to encourage countries to work together and share knowledge.
The efforts of the Environment Agency were:
- Developing plans, programs and launching initiatives to combat desertification and land degradation in order to mitigate this phenomenon. In 2020, it also launched the national initiative to plant 10 million trees, to increase the green area in the Sultanate of Oman, mitigate the phenomenon of desertification and work to restore degraded lands.
- The authority by constructing many fences for planting wild trees in all governorates of the Sultanate of Oman, the most important one was the Green Belt fence in Dhofar Governorate, through which 45 fences of different areas will be constructed, in addition to awareness campaigns targeting members of society in all its different segments and encouraging agriculture and the importance of preserving green spaces and their sustainability.
- The Sultanate of Oman worked to prepare the national plan to combat desertification and update it every 10 years. The first national plan to combat desertification was prepared in 2005, and work is currently underway to prepare the national plan 2018-2030, in addition to preparing the national plan to combat drought, and work is currently underway to review it with the Arab Organization for Development. agricultural.
