In the quiet corners of Al-Alya village, nestled within the Wilayat of Al-Awabi, the morning begins with the gentle rush of water through the stone channels of the aflaj, a life-giving system that has connected Omani families for centuries.
A Community Bound by Water
Under the shade of date palms, these ancient watercourses do not merely sustain agriculture; they carry the shared memories and social rhythms of the community. To protect this heritage, the youth of the village recently gathered to ensure this vital rhythm continues. Under the theme “Youth Ambition to Serve the Country,” the voluntary campaign brought together local residents to restore and clean the village’s historic pathways and facilities.
Organized by the Najm Al-Alya Sports and Cultural Team in cooperation with the local municipality, the effort was a testament to the enduring Omani tradition of community collaboration, where generations work side by side to support their shared home.
Clearing the Channels of Memory
The volunteers spent hours cleaning the village streets, maintaining local mosques, and clearing the aflaj channels of accumulated dust, soil, and sediment. Over time, desert winds and seasonal rains deposit debris that can slow the delicate flow of water. By manually clearing these pathways, the youth restored the vital channels that feed the village gardens.
This physical labor did more than protect water resources; it preserved a tangible connection to the village’s historical landscape. The work reflects a deep-seated understanding of the land’s needs, passed down from one generation to the next.
An Enduring Legacy of Care
For the residents of Al-Alya, this campaign is a reminder that Omani heritage is not static. It is maintained through small, daily acts of care and collective responsibility. When the youth of today clear the stone channels built by their ancestors, they ensure that the water, and the stories it carries, will keep flowing for years to come.
