A student research team from Sultan Qaboos University’s (SQU) College of Engineering has secured international recognition, winning the prestigious Technical Innovation and Excellence Award at the annual American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) global summit in Houston, Texas.
The triumph marks a high-water mark for Omani higher education and subsurface geoscience. After securing first place in the Middle East regional qualifiers, the SQU delegation—representing the Department of Petroleum and Chemical Engineering—advanced to the global finals at the International Meeting for Applied Geoscience & Energy (IMAGE 2026), competing directly against leading international research universities.

Unraveling Complex Subsurface Data Under Global Scrutiny
The competition challenged teams to decode massive, multi-dimensional seismic and geophysical datasets, identify prospective energy reservoirs, and engineer precise geological risk mitigation strategies within tight operational deadlines.
Supervised by Dr. Mohammed Farfour, Associate Professor of Petroleum Geosciences, the team synthesized complex structural geology with automated data modeling to deliver an integrated reservoir evaluation. The team’s findings were defended live before an expert jury comprising senior energy executives, exploration specialists, and international geoscientists.
