Oman’s local liquidity (M2 money supply) experienced a strong expansion, rising by 12.7% year-on-year to reach OMR 28.6012 billion by the end of May 2026. This is up from OMR 25.376 billion recorded during the same period in 2025, according to the latest data released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
This growth reflects solid confidence in the Sultanate’s banking sector and aligns with national economic goals under Oman Vision 2040 to foster a resilient and diversified monetary environment.
Narrow Money and Private Deposits Expand
Narrow money (M1), which tracks currency in circulation and demand deposits, rose by 26.9% to reach OMR 9.073 billion by the end of May 2026, compared to OMR 7.148 billion in May 2025. This uptick indicates increased transactional activity and business operations within the domestic market.
Concurrently, total private sector deposits across commercial banks and Islamic windows grew by 8.9%, reaching OMR 22.7579 billion up from OMR 20.898 billion in the previous year. This steady accumulation of private deposits highlights the saving capacity and liquidity of Omani businesses and households.
Central Bank Reserves Grow
The Central Bank of Oman (CBO) also registered growth in its foreign assets, which rose by 2.5% to reach OMR 7.5936 billion, compared to OMR 7.4101 billion in May 2025. The expansion of these foreign assets reinforces the stability of the Omani Rial and supports the national credit rating in international markets.
