Oman Celebrates World Ozone Day, Strengthens Global Environmental Commitment
Oman, through its Environment Authority, joined the world today in celebrating World Ozone Day under the theme “From Science to Global Action.” The occasion highlights Oman’s continued efforts to protect the ozone layer and promote environmental sustainability.
Key Highlights of Oman’s Ozone Protection Efforts
1. Active International Participation
- Oman ratified the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol under Royal Decree No. 73/1998.
- Fully complied with amendments from London, Copenhagen, Montreal, Beijing, and Kigali.
2. Phasing Out Harmful Substances
- Eliminated halons and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) by 2010.
- Ceased use of methyl bromide by 2015.
3. Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) Reduction
- 10% reduction achieved in 2015.
- 35% reduction achieved in 2020.
- Targeting 67.5% reduction by 2025.
4. Phase Three of HCFC Strategy
- Implemented in collaboration with UNEP and UNIDO.
