Oman and Botswana: A Growing Partnership
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
The relationship between the Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Botswana is entering a new phase, shaped by growing diplomatic engagement, economic cooperation, and a shared interest in creating opportunities for sustainable development.
Although geographically distant, the two countries have developed active ties. Cooperation has expanded into areas including mining, energy, investment, agriculture, logistics, healthcare, and renewable energy. Earlier agreements have covered mineral exploration, petroleum-product storage, solar energy, and medical cooperation.
A Landmark State Visit
This relationship gained momentum with His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s state visit to Botswana on September 16–17, 2026. The visit, the Sultan’s first to Botswana, was hosted by President Duma Gideon Boko and included official talks focused on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation.
Key Areas of Cooperation
During the visit, the two sides discussed renewable energy, mining, investment, logistics, food security, and agriculture. Nine agreements and memoranda of understanding were also signed, covering political consultations, air services, investment promotion, pharmaceutical cooperation, mining exploration, energy security, and business cooperation between institutions in Oman and Botswana.
Private Sector and Development Focus
The visit also highlighted opportunities for closer cooperation between the private sectors of both countries. Oman’s approach places emphasis not only on investment and economic returns, but also on creating employment opportunities and ensuring that the benefits of joint projects reach communities in both countries.
People-to-People Connections
Beyond economics, the visit reflected a broader commitment to dialogue and people-to-people connections. In his address at the state dinner, His Majesty Sultan Haitham highlighted the importance of understanding between peoples and cultural exchange in building lasting relationships between nations.

As Oman and Botswana continue to strengthen their partnership, the agreements signed during the visit provide a foundation for further cooperation. The next chapter will focus on translating these commitments into practical projects, connections, and shared opportunities for the people of both countries.
