Oman Achieves Top Rank in Global Cybersecurity Preparedness for 2024

In a remarkable accomplishment, the Sultanate of Oman has been recognized as one of the leading countries in cybersecurity readiness, securing the top position in the 2024 edition of the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) released by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). This recognition underscores Oman’s commitment to enhancing its cybersecurity framework and capabilities.

A Benchmark of Excellence

Oman has placed in the first tier of the GCI, which includes countries that scored between 95 and 100 across five critical criteria. The Sultanate’s score has improved from 96 points in the 2020 index to an impressive 97.02 points in this latest assessment, demonstrating a continuous enhancement of its cybersecurity measures.

Criteria for Evaluation

The ITU evaluates countries based on five main criteria:

  1. Legal Framework: Establishing laws and regulations that support cybersecurity.
  2. Technical Measures: Implementing advanced technologies to protect digital infrastructure.
  3. Organizational Framework: Creating effective structures and policies for cybersecurity governance.
  4. Capacity Building: Developing skills and competencies in the workforce to address cybersecurity challenges.
  5. International Cooperation: Collaborating with other nations and organizations to bolster global cybersecurity efforts.

Oman excelled particularly in the areas of international cooperation and organizational frameworks, achieving full marks of 20 points in both categories. The Sultanate also scored 19.59 points in the legal criterion, 18.39 points in technical measures, and 19.03 points in capacity building.

Significance of the Ranking

This recognition highlights Oman’s proactive approach to cybersecurity, emphasizing the importance of a robust legal and organizational framework in safeguarding national digital assets. It also reflects the Sultanate’s dedication to international collaboration, which is vital for addressing cyber threats that cross borders.

As cyber threats continue to evolve and pose risks to global security, Oman’s ranking serves as a benchmark for other nations striving to improve their cybersecurity readiness. This achievement not only enhances the country’s reputation on the global stage but also reassures citizens and businesses of a secure digital environment.

Conclusion

Oman’s rise to the top of the Global Cybersecurity Index is a testament to its strategic focus on cybersecurity and its commitment to creating a safe and resilient digital landscape. As the nation continues to invest in its cybersecurity infrastructure and capabilities, it sets an example for others in the region and beyond, underscoring the critical importance of preparedness in an increasingly connected world.
