Loss of mobility following a run-over accident: First successful specialized spine surgery in Al Suwaiq

In a significant medical milestone, Al Suwaiq Hospital has successfully performed its first specialized spinal surgery on a patient who suffered severe injuries in a traffic accident.

The complex procedure was carried out by a specialized medical team from Khoula Hospital in collaboration with the medical staff at Al Suwaiq Hospital. The surgery, which lasted approximately three hours, addressed critical spinal injuries sustained by the patient after a run-over accident.

Upon arrival at the hospital’s emergency department, the patient underwent immediate evaluation and advanced diagnostic imaging, including CT scans and MRI. The results revealed multiple fractures across four levels of the thoracic and lumbar spine, accompanied by severe pressure on the spinal nerves within the spinal canal. This condition had resulted in loss of movement in the patient’s lower limbs.

The surgical intervention involved decompression of the spinal canal and stabilization of the fractured vertebrae using specialized medical screws. The primary objective was to relieve pressure on the spinal nerves and restore structural stability to the spine. The operation was successfully completed after several hours.

Following the surgery, the patient has shown encouraging signs of improvement and is currently undergoing continuous medical monitoring and rehabilitation under the supervision of the healthcare team.

This achievement marks a major step forward in the development of specialized healthcare services at Al Suwaiq Hospital. It also highlights the strong integration and collaboration among healthcare institutions in the Sultanate of Oman, supporting efforts to localize advanced medical services and enhance the capacity of both referral and local hospitals to deliver high-quality care to citizens and residents.
