Oman is harvesting a bold vision for self-reliance as the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning unveils the master plan for Najd Agricultural City in Thumrait. Spanning a massive 54 million square meters in southern Oman’s Dhofar Governorate, this landmark development is set to revolutionize the nation’s agricultural landscape and accelerate food security under Oman Vision 2040.
The unveiling took place at the Dhofar Food Security Forum 2026, where officials also signed ten agricultural and livestock usufruct contracts exceeding two million Omani Rials across more than 2,000 acres. These high-impact investments will empower local farming, poultry production, watermelon and melon cultivation, and sustainable livestock farming across Muqshin, Thumrait, and Shalheem.
Transforming Arid Lands into High-Tech Farming Hubs
Najd, a vast desert plateau known for its rich underground aquifers and fertile soils, is transforming into a high-tech agricultural power hub. Designed as an eco-friendly farming city with research centers and solar-powered irrigation systems, the mega project aims to produce over 105,000 tons of crops annually. Over its development phases, it is projected to contribute 125 million Omani Rials to the national economy and create more than 6,500 new jobs.
