Bridging Two Ancient Civilisations: Cultural and Historical Relations Between Oman and China

Oman and China share a history of contact that extends back many centuries. Their historical relationship developed through maritime trade, travel, and cultural exchange across the Indian Ocean and the wider maritime networks connecting Asia and the Arabian Peninsula. These historical links provide a foundation for the modern relationship between the two countries.

Historical Relations and Diplomatic Ties

According to the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in Beijing, the history of Omani–Chinese relations reaches back to approximately 750 AD, when an Omani merchant travelled to China. Formal diplomatic relations were established in 1978, and the strategic partnership announced in 2018 marked a new stage in bilateral cooperation. The Omani government also identifies cultural, educational, and scientific exchange as important objectives of its diplomatic mission in China.

Maritime Heritage and Shared History

Maritime heritage is one of the most visible expressions of this shared history. The Omani sailing ship Sohar, built according to traditional wooden-ship designs, retraced a historic maritime route from Oman to China, arriving in Guangzhou in 1981. The journey commemorated the historical connections between the two countries and the role of maritime trade in bringing their peoples into contact. China has also recognised these connections through historical monuments and cultural initiatives.

Zheng He and Historical Connections

Another important historical connection is the Chinese navigator Zheng He, whose voyages included visits to Oman during the fifteenth century. In 2023, a monument commemorating Zheng He was inaugurated in Salalah. The monument symbolises the historical connections between China and Oman and provides a public reminder of the longstanding exchanges between their civilisations.

Cultural Diplomacy and Academic Exchange

Modern cultural diplomacy builds on this heritage through academic discussions, exhibitions, public events, and people-to-people exchanges. In December 2023, the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in Beijing organised a cultural symposium titled Omani-Chinese Relations: Thousands of Years into Eternity. The event brought together researchers, academics, students, and representatives of diplomatic missions to discuss historical relations, literature, maritime connections, and opportunities for future cooperation. An exhibition on the Frankincense Route and Oman’s representation in ancient Chinese records was also part of the programme.

Language, Education, and People-to-People Connections

Cultural exchange also connects with contemporary education. Chinese-language programmes in Oman and Arabic-language studies in China create opportunities for people to understand one another’s languages, literature, and traditions. These initiatives can strengthen mutual respect and help establish closer connections between students, researchers, and communities.

Conclusion

Cultural relations are an essential part of the Oman–China partnership. Shared maritime history, historic monuments, academic exchange, and cultural events demonstrate that the relationship is not limited to diplomacy and business. It is also rooted in centuries of interaction between two civilisations.
