Oman Vision 2040 Drives Healthcare Transformation Toward a Sustainable Future
Oman is making significant progress in transforming its healthcare system under the framework of Oman Vision 2040. The initiative focuses on building a sustainable, inclusive, and technologically advanced healthcare sector that places people at the center of national development.
Major Healthcare Reforms and Infrastructure Expansion
As part of the Tenth Five-Year Development Plan, Oman has implemented comprehensive reforms, including restructuring healthcare governance under Royal Decree No. 10/2024. This framework promotes decentralization and improves efficiency through the establishment of specialized agencies.
The country has also made substantial investments in healthcare infrastructure. Four major hospitals have been inaugurated, alongside expansions of key regional hospitals and the National Heart Center. In addition, primary healthcare services have been strengthened through the development of new health complexes and the upgrading of existing facilities.
Digital Health and Artificial Intelligence
Oman is actively embracing digital transformation in healthcare by integrating advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence into diagnostic services. A notable example is the national diabetic retinopathy screening program, which has significantly reduced waiting times while maintaining high diagnostic accuracy.
Further demonstrating its commitment to innovation, Oman has launched the Omani Genome Program and implemented a unified electronic health record system connecting more than 250 healthcare institutions. These initiatives support the advancement of personalized medicine and data-driven healthcare solutions.
Pharmaceutical Self-Sufficiency and Investment
Efforts to localize pharmaceutical production are gaining momentum, with 21 operational medical factories and additional projects currently under development. Strategic partnerships with national manufacturers aim to produce essential medicines locally, enhancing sustainability while attracting both domestic and international investment.
Improved Global Rankings and Public Satisfaction
Oman’s healthcare advancements have contributed to improved rankings in global health indices. The country’s healthy life expectancy now exceeds the global average, while public satisfaction with healthcare services has surpassed 80%, reflecting the effectiveness of ongoing reforms.
Future Outlook
Looking ahead, Oman aims to further enhance healthcare efficiency, expand the adoption of advanced technologies, and invest in national talent. These efforts will support the development of a world-class healthcare system that ensures long-term sustainability and improves overall quality of life.
