Two Decades of Growth: Salalah Free Zone Reaches OMR 5.1 Billion in Cumulative Investments

Celebrating 20 years of operation, the Salalah Free Zone has established itself as a cornerstone of Oman’s economic diversification strategy. Cumulative investments in the zone have reached OMR 5.15 billion, demonstrating strong investor confidence and proving the value of capitalizing on Oman’s strategic geographical assets.

From Local Initiative to Global Logistics Hub

Since its inception in 2006, the Salalah Free Zone has successfully attracted international corporations and industrial players. Dr. Ali bin Mohammed Tabok, CEO of the Salalah Free Zone, noted that the area now hosts 105 active and under-development projects, with 50% already in full operation. This industrial activity has positioned the zone as a key exporter of Omani-made products to global markets.

The zone’s success is heavily tied to its location. Situated adjacent to the Port of Salalah, it acts as a primary trade bridge connecting major markets across the Indian Ocean, East Africa, and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The zone has successfully drawn significant investments from key global economies, including the United States, India, and neighbouring Gulf nations.

Two Decades of Strategic Evolution

The development of the Salalah Free Zone has progressed through two distinct strategic phases:

  • Phase One (2006–2015): Focus was placed on establishing heavy infrastructure, chemical and petrochemical processing plants, logistics services, and mineral extraction. This built the industrial foundation of the zone.
  • Phase Two (2016–2025): Operations diversified into high-value sectors such as food security, agricultural processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, medical solutions, dairy production, and sustainable green energy initiatives.

Surging Trade and Logistics Performance

The zone’s logistical activity has shown outstanding growth in recent years. Between 2021 and 2025, container throughput surged by 106%, with the zone handling over 225,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units). This growth has been driven by a major increase in dry bulk handling and general cargo operations, reflecting Salalah’s expanding role in international supply chains.

Supporting Oman Vision 2040

Beyond attracting international capital, the Salalah Free Zone plays a crucial role in enhancing Omani local content. By creating high-skilled employment opportunities, supporting local supply chains, and encouraging Omani manufacturing, the zone directly aligns with the economic goals of Oman Vision 2040. The transition toward low-carbon and green energy projects within the zone also supports the country’s long-term sustainability and net-zero targets.

“We have spent twenty years turning local potential into global value. Today, Salalah is not just a free zone; it is a major engine driving Oman’s economic future.” — Dr. Ali bin Mohammed Tabok
