The Omani Halal System has achieved a major international milestone after being officially approved by the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC). The decision, made during the SMIIC Board of Directors meeting, marks a significant step forward in integrating Oman’s conformity assessment and standardization framework with global Islamic markets.
Expanding Global Market Access
Managed by the Omani Accreditation Center under the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, the Omani Halal System ensures that local products meet rigorous quality and religious standards. The official approval by SMIIC—an affiliate of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)—means Omani Halal certificates will now be recognized across the 57 member states of the organization.
For Omani manufacturers, this development reduces trade barriers. Exporters of food products, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and chemical goods can now enter these diverse markets without undergoing duplicate inspection or certification processes. By streamlining customs procedures, this recognition lowers operational costs and enhances the competitiveness of Omani products on the global stage.
Reinforcing Standards and Quality
The adoption of the Omani system reflects the high capability of the Sultanate’s national laboratories and quality assessment bodies. It confirms that the technical regulations and auditing practices employed in Oman align with international best practices. This alignment builds trust among international consumers, ensuring that any product carrying the Omani Halal seal meets the highest safety and compliance standards.
“This international endorsement from SMIIC is a testament to the sophistication of our national quality infrastructure, paving the way for Omani brands to expand their presence in high-growth Islamic economies.”
Aligning with Vision 2040
Strengthening the national accreditation framework is a key pillar of Oman Vision 2040, which aims to diversify the economy and expand non-oil exports. By securing international recognition for national standards, the Sultanate continues to foster an environment conducive to industrial growth, making local manufacturing more attractive for both domestic and foreign investors seeking to export to regional and global markets.
