Oman Launches English Version of National Risk Register Community Edition

The Sultanate of Oman has launched the English version of the Community Edition of the National Risk Register, marking a significant step towards strengthening community resilience, disaster preparedness, and public safety awareness. Launched in conjunction with the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, the initiative aims to make essential risk information accessible to citizens, residents, and international visitors who do not speak Arabic.

Strengthening Disaster Preparedness and Community Resilience

The initiative reflects Oman’s commitment to proactive risk management and effective governance. By making specialised risk information accessible to the wider community, the National Risk Register encourages individuals to understand potential hazards, adopt preventive measures, and respond effectively to emergencies.

It also reinforces the principle that community awareness and preparedness are essential to reducing risks, protecting lives, and safeguarding property during crises and emergency situations.

Four Key Areas Covered by the National Risk Register

The Community Edition identifies four major categories of potential risks and provides practical guidance on prevention and emergency response.

  1. Natural Hazards: Guidance on extreme weather conditions, tropical cyclones, and flash floods, including safety measures to protect lives and property.
  2. Essential Services: Information on preparing for disruptions to electricity, water supplies, and telecommunications to minimise the impact on daily life.
  3. Public Health: Awareness of epidemics and infectious diseases, alongside recommended preventive and health protection measures.
  4. Major Incidents: Guidance on responding to large-scale fires and major transport accidents, including evacuation procedures and contacting the relevant authorities.

Supporting Oman Vision 2040

The National Risk Register supports strategic planning and data-driven decision-making while contributing to the objectives of Oman Vision 2040. These include effective governance, sustainable development, and building a resilient national emergency response system.

The launch of the English edition expands access to critical safety information, strengthens disaster risk awareness, and supports a more prepared and resilient society.

Through this initiative, Oman continues to promote shared responsibility, enhance emergency preparedness, and reinforce its commitment to public safety and sustainable national development.
