Oman Authorities Mobilize to Contain Oil Leak Near Al Qibliyah Island

Official Statement

Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Rawahi, Director General of Maritime Affairs at Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, stated that current efforts are focused on stopping the oil leak and stabilizing the vessel stranded near Al Qibliyah Island.

Response Plan

As an initial step, teams plan to transfer oil from the damaged tanks to other tanks within the vessel once sea conditions improve. The final stage will involve transferring the oil to another vessel, depending on calmer seas and lower waves.

Operational Challenges

Operations are challenging because the leak is located on the vessel’s tilted, partially submerged side. Special equipment is being developed to access the area safely.

Safety Concerns

The vessel also currently has no electrical power, while the presence of flammable oil makes the working environment highly hazardous, requiring strict safety measures.
