In a historic step for the nation’s literary landscape, twelve Omani writers have brought their plays from the quiet sanctuary of the page to the permanent sanctuary of print, creating a lasting archive of local dramatic voice.
A Dedicated Archive for Local Drama
The Omani Theatre Association, in collaboration with Dar Laban for Publishing and supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, has released twelve new books. Each volume represents a distinct Omani playwright, capturing the diversity of contemporary dramatic writing in the Sultanate. This initiative aims to enrich Omani library shelves and document the creative output of local dramatists.
By publishing these texts, the association provides a valuable resource for directors, actors, and researchers, ensuring that local scripts are preserved and made accessible beyond the temporary lifespan of a stage performance.
A Rich Diversity of Themes
The collection spans a wide variety of genres, from experimental monodrama to children’s science fiction. For instance, children’s author Dr. Wafaa Al-Shamsiyah contributes “Shami Kish,” a set of two plays that tell stories of space travel and cultural connection. In another volume, poet and playwright Abdulrazzaq Al-Rubaie explores philosophy and modern communication in “Socrates and the Last Tweet.”
Other works, such as Dr. Azza Al-Qasabiyah’s “Echoes of the Self,” delve into internal human struggles and memory. This thematic variety highlights the growth and sophistication of Omani theatre, reflecting the complexities of contemporary life.
Preserving the Voices of Tomorrow
These publications remind us that the stage is a vital mirror of society. Writing down these plays creates a bridge between literature and performance. These twelve books ensure that Omani stories will not only be heard under the spotlight today, but will remain alive for readers and performers in the years to come.
