Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to start a diving business in Oman?
I am a mechanical and computer engineer who dedicated a significant portion of my career to the Oil and Gas industry, spending over six years working outside Oman in various countries, primarily in oil fields. Upon returning to Oman in 2010, I felt compelled to embark on a new journey, one that would allow me to channel my passion into a business endeavor. Having grown up near the coast and been an avid scuba diver since 2004, the ocean has always held a special place in my heart. This deep love for the sea inspired me to establish my own dive center, which has since become the focal point of my life.
Starting modestly with just one boat and a handful of enthusiastic friends, our dive center has steadily grown into a reputable operation recognized for its commitment to safety, education, and environmental stewardship. For me, scuba diving transcends mere recreation; it embodies a way of life.
In 2016, fueled by my passion to share this transformative experience with others, I attained a certification as a PADI dive instructor. This milestone marked not only a personal achievement but also a commitment to imparting my knowledge and love for diving to future generations. As an instructor, I find immense joy and fulfillment in guiding and educating divers of all ages and backgrounds, nurturing their curiosity and respect for marine ecosystems.
Through my journey from the oil fields to the ocean depths, I have discovered that pursuing one’s passion with dedication and purpose can lead to unexpected and rewarding opportunities. My dive center stands as a testament to this belief, a culmination of years of hard work, perseverance, and a deep-seated love for the sea.
How do you ensure the safety of your customers during diving expeditions, and what measures do you take to protect the marine ecosystem?
Ensuring the safety of our customers during diving expeditions is our top priority. At our dive center, we adhere to rigorous safety protocols and standards to provide a secure and enjoyable experience for every diver. Before anyone enters the water, we conduct thorough briefings on essential safety procedures and equip divers with the knowledge to handle various potential situations they may encounter underwater. Our staff, including dive guides and boat crews, are trained extensively in emergency response techniques. Each dive boat is equipped with a comprehensive first aid kit and emergency oxygen, ensuring that we are prepared to respond swiftly to any medical emergencies that may arise.
To protect the marine ecosystem, we integrate principles of environmental stewardship into our dive training programs. We emphasize the importance of responsible diving practices, such as maintaining buoyancy control to avoid damaging fragile coral reefs and minimizing contact with marine life to prevent disturbance. Our instructors educate divers on the significance of “Leave only bubbles,” encouraging them to leave no physical trace behind and to respect the natural habitats they explore.
What are some of the most memorable or exciting diving experiences that you or your customers have had in Oman?
Swimming with humpback whales near the Halaniyat Islands, scuba diving alongside whale sharks at the Daymaniyat Islands, and witnessing dolphins playfully leaping around our boat. Observing tiny nudibranchs crawl delicately on shipwrecks, cleaner shrimps atop moray eels, or an octopus gently exploring your arm with its curious tentacles in the vast blue world.
Over my 20 years of scuba diving, countless remarkable events and scenarios have unfolded. Each experience in my journey has deepened my love for the oceans. Every diver cherishes the dream of encountering a marine creature that captivates them, and realizing that dream remains one of the most exhilarating moments in a diver’s life. It’s a feeling that lingers until they add new dream encounters to their list.
How do you incorporate elements of Omani culture into the diving experiences you offer to tourists?
We have infused our boats with a touch of Omani culture by placing a strong emphasis on environmental conservation, aligning with Omani values. Our dive practices strictly adhere to sustainable guidelines, and we prioritize educating our guests about the importance of the marine ecosystem in Omani culture.
Furthermore, we offer cultural demonstrations onboard, including traditional Omani music and dance sessions. During special occasions such as Ramadan and Eid holidays, we enhance our guests’ experience by serving traditional Omani cuisine onboard. Additionally, during Oman’s National Day holidays, our boat proudly displays the colors of the Omani flag, celebrating our national pride and heritage. These cultural elements enrich our guests’ diving experience, providing them with a deeper appreciation of Omani traditions and values while fostering a connection to our marine environment.
Can you share any conservation or sustainability initiatives that your diving business is involved in to protect the marine environment in Oman?
We have taken proactive steps in marine conservation, with one of our most impactful initiatives focused on removing ghost nets inadvertently lost by fishermen, which can ensnare coral reefs and marine life. On June 29, 2024, we successfully removed approximately 600 kilograms of nets from a coral reef at the Daymaniyat Islands. Whenever we spot or receive reports of these nets, we promptly organize removal efforts to mitigate their environmental impact.
In addition to our cleanup efforts, we are committed to educating our community through conservation programs such as Reef Check and the PADI Divers Against Debris specialty course. These programs not only raise awareness but also empower divers to actively participate in keeping our oceans clean and healthy.
Furthermore, Omanta Scuba supports marine scientists studying various marine animals and coral species in Oman’s waters. By collaborating with researchers, we contribute to scientific knowledge and conservation efforts aimed at preserving our marine ecosystems for future generations. Our dedication to marine conservation underscores our mission to protect and sustain the natural beauty and biodiversity of Oman’s seas.
How has the diving tourism industry in Oman evolved over the years, and what trends do you foresee for the future?
When I first established the dive center, Muscat had approximately four dive centers. Today, that number has grown to over ten, accompanied by a notable increase in Omani dive instructors who passionately share their love for the ocean and continue to mentor future divers.
Oman holds tremendous potential to become a leading global diving destination, akin to Thailand and Egypt. I anticipate Omani divers taking the helm of the dive industry in the Gulf countries within the coming years, driven by their deep-rooted passion and commitment to advancing the sport locally and internationally.
What challenges have you faced while running a diving business in Oman, and how have you overcome them?
One of the primary challenges we face is sourcing parts and equipment for our boats and diving gear in Oman. As Oman’s market continues to grow and more divers emerge, the demand for equipment will likely spur entrepreneurial ventures to fill this gap. We foresee a future where more businesses will open shops dedicated to meeting the needs of divers and boaters, thereby addressing this challenge and ensuring better access to necessary equipment and supplies.
