Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar (The Green Mountain) in Ad Dakhiliyah governorate has a unique climate similar to that of the Mediterranean basin, which earned it a variety of crops and uniqueness in the quality of its crops especially the Pomegranate.
People are preparing to harvest pomegranate fruits from different villages in Jabal Al-Akhdar during the last third of August and continue until the end of September, the peak is always in mid of September. The number of trees is estimated at about 27 thousand distributed over various villages. It produces about 645 tons of fruits .its considered one of the most important fruit trees in terms of economic feasibility and agricultural area in the mountain.
There are three groups of pomegranate varieties in Jabal Al Akhdar: sweet, sweet-sour and Sour. Pomegranate is rich in vitamins (A, B, C), low amounts of iron, phosphorus, potassium, and manganese. Pomegranate is full of antioxidants, substances known to reduce harmful cholesterol and prevent atherosclerosis and contribute to the increase of oxygen in the heart.
Farmers in Jabal Al Akhdar sell pomegranates through Nizwa market and some other nearby markets, as well as through selling booths in some tourist sites in the mountain. The price of pomegranates ranges from 2 to 3 Omani rials per kilogram or from half Omani rials to 3 Omani rials per grain of pomegranate depending on the size of the crop. According to farmers, this price is suitable for the great effort and intensive care and continuous follow-up from the beginning of tree care in January until the date of harvest in September in addition to the fact that the crop is 100% organic and natural.
