When the Syrian crisis occurred in 2011, Oman has declared its rejection to the armed operations. It has always been in favor of the (legitimacy ) and the legitimate options in general. Oman has also called to pursue peaceful and diplomatic ways to resolve this crisis. During the Syrian crisis, the Omani Authority has maintained diplomatic relations with Syria. Due to that, its embassy in Damascus wasn’t closed in order to consolidate its position as a neutral party. The Sultanate clearly sought a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis. During the talks between the Foreign Minister Yusuf bin Alawi's with his Syrian counterpart Walid al-Moallem in Muscat, in August 2015, the discussion and the focus was mostly revolved on reaching diplomatic resolutions. Oman believes that the security threats faced by a number of countries in the region, including Syria, had a negative impact on the rest of the region. In this regard, It should be noted that Oman has succeeded in the mediating role resolving many crises, especially the nuclear file crisis between Tehran and the (5 + 1), where Muscat witnessed meetings between representatives of the Group of Six and Iran. Highlighting Oman’s role in the Syrian crisis is a way to present its peaceful project among the military and security clashes in the region from one hand, and the political rivalries and the major actors in this crisis on the other hand, as this reflects its strategic interest too. The Sultanate continued working in order to bring the region's parties closer, to find a political solution to the situation in Syria. Walid al-Moallem also reviewed with His Highness Sayyid Asa'ad bin Tariq Al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for Relations and International Cooperation, and the Special Representative of His Majesty the Sultan, the advanced bilateral relations, and the importance of continued close communication between the two countries. Finally, it should be emphasized that the Sultanate's success in creating an ideal environment for dialogue and acceptance by the parties as a backchannel, like what happened in the Iranian nuclear file, encouraged others to follow this model in solving the Syrian crisis through dialogue and recognition of the great complexity of it. In fact that the Sultanate, as usual, have been involved in the dialogue, for the purposes of achieving a breakthrough in this crisis, where always the Omani mediation was internationally approved.
